What is home wireless?

Internet connectivity can be delivered via microwave radio.A new fad is 'home wireless' which uses a small transmitter to connect computers in your home together, or to share a regular internet connection. You may have heard of the new 'wireless laptops' or PDA's that can surf the net anywhere without plugging in a modem or network cable. This is a half-truth; they only work when a wireless connection is nearby like in a cafe, hotel, airport, or a home transmitter.

UNDERSTAND THE DISTINCTION: "Wireless" is a term for any connection that does not require hard wiring. For your laptop it is the signal that connects to the nearest transmitter. That could be through your own or a cafe's router or a plug-in card in your laptop that uses the more expensive cell phone system in some places. Some places it is free, some places (like airports) pricey.
MaxAir Rural Broadband delivers the Internet to your home in a similar fashion using much more powerful equipment that is visible on a laptop but locked down to only talk to other dedicated radios. You can't just turn on your laptop and connect to our internet feeds.
It is quite similar to cable internet, the "share" points are at the transmitter spots, not quite as crowded as a`city cable system. Do not be fooled, all connections are shared, your ADSL is shared once it hits the telephone office, too.

Long before 'wireless cafes' and 'home wireless' became popular we were working with long range wireless internet transmissions to deliver the internet to larger institutions, amd Max has been a recognized BC pioneer in the internet to home market for several years.
MaxAir Rural Internet places your home onto a connected network that is shared by users on the system. You get broadband (high speed) service, but it is shared so the speed may vary from faster than ADSL to slower than ADSL but faster than dial-up during heavy use. Max has state  of the art bandwidth managers that filter the traffic so that you get priority to surf the internet and send or receive e-mail over others downloading music to compensate for these periods. If you want to download a lot of music. move to town and go on someone else's internet; we're not in business to help you steal music or movies. We'll kick you off if you affect others.

The newest generation of equipment dramatically drops the cost and ease of installations. Max has commited to an agreement with the local Fort St James TV & Radio society to use their mountaintop towers for wireless internet services. A portion of what you pay for wireless services goes to TV society so they can continue upgrading equipment and maintain their low cost services. Right now anyone with a wireless laptop can walk around town and access the internet as long as they can see the tower and are programmed into our system.

Wireless internet is a 'line of sight' service. If you can see the transmitter from your home, you can access it with the right equipment.
There are two main types of connection
Antenna Flat Panel

To obtain our MaxAir service, lease and buy additional equipment from us.
Lease

For a $250 fee we will install the equipment and set up your computer for wireless service (we will not debug existing problems!). You can then pay $39.95 per month, $115 every 3 months or $449 a year for your access. You will only pay more if you break our equipment or ask us to change it. If you move locally we can reinstall for a standard fee of $60 - $75. If you leave town or cancel your service you must return the radio and wiring to Max. When you lease Max maintains equipment, we will upgrade yours free if there are any problems.
Buy

If you want equipment to rebroadcast the signal, for example a home wireless router or for a commercial access-point  (motel, campground, sawmill, etc) we provide a range of units with installation and setup included.
If you choose a single computer PCI or USB installation, leave the antenna in place when you move and the PCI card or USB equipment is yours when you end your service.
We will not allow equipment not owned by Max to connect directly to our main radios.
Max will not allow you to purchase equipment somewhere else and connect it to our system
While the equipment we sell will work on on any 2.4GHz wireless connection, this is not true of the equipment other people sell.

Antennas for the internet are just like antennas for TV, radio, and satellite, and must be pointed in the right direction to work properly. It is up to you to check the antennas alignment once it's installed, clear it of snow and ice, and keep any trees or obstacles out of it's path.
What do I have to know to use Wireless Internet?
Broadband internet uses network configurations. You'll only need to know how to find your network configuration. The booklet will supply the numbers you need to enter and you will have software to monitor the signal.
Wireless is also available for businesses starting at $299 for installation and $59.95 per month. Call for details.
